I was asked to do a series of tips for saving money relating to food on LBC radio and thought they were worth sharing too
Everybody is feeling the pinch of rising bills, mortgages etc ….. here are some handy tips on saving money on your food shop….that will leave you with cash to spare for nights out and new clothes !
Before you go shopping ….plan what meals you will need for the week so you dont overshop… check the supermarket special offers online and make use of the offers in your meal plans
Buy seasonal food …it is always cheaper and it’s better for you and less likely to have been flown half way round the world too
When you are shopping …..check shelf lives on fresh items and make sure you pick up longest life items so you have longer to use them…..
…. look at reduced to clear section particularly for meat and fish etc and freeze it until you are going to use things in your menu plan
During the week plans change and you may not eat as many meals at home as you thought so check your veggies and and fridge if you have not used things you planned to then cook and freeze them or just freeze them ( and plan them into next week’s menu)
Use leftovers from meals to take to work as packed lunches or freeze them so you can use them another time when you just need 1 meal
high risk loans
If you are putting on oven stick in a couple of jacket potatoes too for a lunch or another night
Left over potato makes a fantastic Spanish omelette with some fried onions, peppers and a good pinch of smoked paprika “ its great to eat hot or cold. Potato salad made from leftover potato is a great addition to a meal or a lunch box too….
Vegetables like French beans , broccoli and carrots can be reused cold and make really tasty additions to salads with vinaigrette dressings
Grow your own summer salads. Mixed salad leaves, tomatoes and herbs all grow well in pots either in a garden or balcony or even inside and you can pick them as you need them so don’t waste so much.
Don’t dress salad as it won’t keep for long once the dressing is tossed through it - put your own dressing on …on your plate and then if it is not all used, it will last till the next day
Get friendly with your neighbours…. buy bulk sizes and split with friends eg sacks of potatoes from farm shops or big bags rice from Asian grocers as they are a lot cheaper than small supermarket packs
