Booker Beats Rivals in Race to Open in Mumbai

Booker opened its first 35,000 square foot cash and carry in Mumbai last week, two years after they decided it was something they should do.
So far Wal-Mart have partnered with Bharti the telecoms giant  and opened a wholesale depot in Amritsar this year and Tesco are planning a cash and carry in Mumbai with their retail partner Tata , which they hope will open next year. Carrefour are reported to be in talks too.
Feedback from week one is that Indian customers are impressed Booker, a large UK company are prepared to enter their market and trade with the small retailers.

"And as an aside: The network has been a great resource for me. I have been able to save time resourcing products and services I need for my business by being able to just ask someone else in the business. I get an instant answer. Living in Northern Ireland it is a bit more difficult to do business. We lack resources for one and we lack the competiveness that makes most business do what they say they will do because there is no where else for us to go. So even if I find the product or service, a lot of the time they just don't show up. I have gone through 2 egg suppliers, 1 major supplier and 3 produce suppliers, because one day they just decided they wouldn't show up with our delivery even though they would say when called, we will be there in 20 minutes. Amazing, it truly is. And granted, being from California I was accustomed to companies fighting for your business and have tried not to have too many expectations, but if you want to make money you have to deliver the goods. Thanks again for the brilliant idea and hard work you do to create a great food community."
